Welcome to markosier.com!

Welcome to markosier.com. This site is an admittedly-egomaniacial and self-serving place for me to discuss... well... me, and a few of the various and sundry facets of my life.

As you can probably tell from this page, my HTML knowledge ended somewhere in the mid-90's, so the first few dozen versions of this page are likely to be rather rough while I catch up on the last 2 decades of web-related stuff. This page contains no CSS files(although I believe I've used some CSS coding shortcuts), deliberate attempts at XML, or Flash. All things considered, I think I'm lucky that it contains any HTML. :)

Watch this space for future updates.

News and Updates

It's been a while, but finally an update! Sorta... it's more a "lack of progress" update! I've been working on a new site design, but with a one year old it's taking a while. I may have to give up and stop doing this all in NotePad if I ever want to finish.

The Scientist

I've been involved in toxicology since at least 1989, and perhaps before (depending on how you count it). I did my undergraduate work at Ashland University, which was one of only a few undergraduate institutions with a toxicology degree at the time. From there, I earned my PhD at the University of Rochester, and am a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology. Previously, I have worked at Syracuse Research Corporation (now SRC and SRCTEC) and at SNBL USA. I am currently a Senior Research Scientist at Gilead Sciences, Inc. in Foster City, California.

For those who are interested, here is a link to my CV (in PDF format).

The Musician

I've been making music for a couple of decades now, and find it to be a great source of enjoyment and stress relief. I play guitar, a little piano, and I sing. I play and enjoy a lot of different styles of music, from folk to metal and almost everything in between. Additionally, I've written a song or two of my own over the years. Not all of them are good (some would say most of them are terrible), but I've still kept most of them. To see lyrics and chords, head to this page. It also contains links to a few audio files, in case you'd like to take a listen.

Recently, I've started singing for a band here in San Francisco. You can find us on Facebook, Reverb Nation, or YouTube. Come see us live!

People often ask me about recordings of my solo work, and where they can get them. The short answer is that you can't, and won't be able to for at least the near future. I've started trying to record a studio album, but it's a low priority with a baby hanging around the house. These days, I experiment with some home recording and will probably post those here when I find some I'm happy with. In the meantime, I'll stick with playing live and maybe see about some live recordings.

Speaking of playing live, I now have a YouTube channel! I've posted some videos from a concert last year, and will be trying to add more as I find the time to make them.

The Gamer

I've been playing video games of one form or another since before the Atari VCS(they didn't originally call it the 2600) came out, and this trend continues today. My favorite two genres, by far, are turn-based strategy and RPGs. These days, I do most of my gaming on console (Xbox One), but still go back to my PC from time to time.

The Sci-Fi Geek

As early as I remember reading for enjoyment, science fiction and fantasy have been my favorite genres. I've been involved in science fiction and fantasy fandom since 1991, attending and working conventions consistently ever since. I am a proud member of the Dorsai Irregulars.

The Online Comic Addict

OK, so maybe I'm not an addict, but I do have a regular selection of comics that I enjoy. These include Kevin and Kell, Least I Could Do, Looking For Group, Schlock Mercenary, Grrl Power, MeatShield, and Girl Genius. There are lots more, but these are ones I always look forward to.

Other Items of Interest

My wife occasionally tells me that I have too many hobbies. It's entirely possible that she's right. In what little time I have that isn't filled with all of the above interests, I have also studied kung fu. I also enjoy SCUBA diving.
